HERSTORY

MAS

Masako only spoke Japanese. I found notebooks filled with not only English, but Spanish homework. In a world that was foreign to her, she learned 2 different languages and opened her own Barbershop in East LA. I know this because I found her business cards and license as well. They now hang on my wall - I'm really proud of that history.

NOBU

Nobuyo was one for style. From her hair to her shoes, she had the art of outfits down. It's where my family gets its fashion sense. She was a skilled seamstress and an expert in Kimono styling. She wanted independence and found it through sewing. Her husband forbade her to work. Her answer to this was to sneak out and sew. That woman suffered the consequences whenever she was discovered, but she kept doing it - I'm really proud of her grit.
